Pressure sores

WHAT PRESSURE SORES ARE?

Pressure sores are wounds that develop when constant pressure or friction on one area of the body damages the skin. Constant pressure on an area of skin stops blood flowing normally, so the cells die and the skin breaks down. Other names for pressure sores are bedsores, pressure ulcers and decubitus ulcers.

CAUSES OF PRESSURE SORES:

Bedsores happen if you can’t move around and so stay in one position for a long time. Poor nutrition, and poor bladder and bowel control may increase the risk of them. Also, if you’re overweight and suffer from other medical conditions, such as diabetes, the pressure sores may occur.

HOW CAN YOU PREVENT AND TREAT PRESSURE SORES?

There are many things you can do to help prevent pressure sores if you’re at risk.

  1. Position changing. Change position often and keep moving if it’s possible. It’s the best solution for preventing the bedsores. The position should be changed at least every 2 hours in bed and every 15 minute in a wheelchair. To do that, you will need our STABILObed® system providing professional positional therapy.

  2. Skin care. Keeping the skin dry, clean and well moisturized is crucial.

  3. Others. Balanced diet, drinking minimum 2 liters of fluid daily, skin-friendly sheets are also very important.

  4. Use pressure-relieving cushions and pads of STABILObed® system.
